Back in April, Ken had defibrillator surgery. He had done well following the surgery, but it has not made him a new man as we had hoped!! He became concerned about being out west with our motor home, 2500 miles from home, Richmond, VA! I guess you could say, we became practical!!
We are currently at TT Verde Valley, Cottonwood, AZ. We have a number of doctor follow-up appointments. We have decided that when we are finished with the doctors here, we will head back East, about the end of July. We plan to take a leisurely trip East on I-40. Guess we'll get back home sometime in August!!
Just wanted you all to know!!

QUICK ICE CREAM WITH HAROLD AND MARION
Mon, Jul 01 - Is it July already??!! It must be. It's hot enough. In fact, here at TT Verde Valley, Cottonwood, AZ, it is so hot, we are just hibernating inside!! That's where we were, watching tennis at Wimbledon, when we received a phone call from Harold and Marion. They were on a mission to deliver a pick-up truck to someone in Alaska!! They would be stopping at McDonalds in Camp Verde (10 miles away) in 20 minutes. Could we meet them for an ice cream cone?? Of course, we said "Yes"!!
Here we are, enjoying our soft-serve cones! Their's were naked. Our's dipped. UUMMMM!
When we ordered, we had teased the waitress because their naked cones were $1. We said we'd have to go next door to Burger King next time. Their cones were only 50 cents!!! HA HA
We said fairwell to Harold and Marion and sent them on their way to Alaska!!
Thanks guys for thinking to call us to meet you!! Great send-off!!!!

TRAGIC FOREST FIRE NEARBY
Excerpt from an Article in the Arizona Daily Sun
19 Prescott firefighters die after deploying shelters
Gusty, hot winds blew an
Arizona blaze out of control Sunday in a forest northwest of Phoenix,
overtaking and killing 19 members of an elite fire crew in the deadliest
wildfire involving firefighters in the U.S. for at least 30 years.
The "hotshot"
firefighters were forced to deploy their emergency fire shelters — tent-like
structures meant to shield firefighters from flames and heat — when they were
caught near the central Arizona town of Yarnell, state forestry spokesman Art
Morrison told The Associated Press.
The fire also destroyed an
estimated 200 homes, Morrison said. Dry grass near the communities of Yarnell
and Glen Isla fed the fast-moving blaze, which was whipped up by wind and raced
through the homes, he said.
The fire still burned late
Sunday, with flames lighting up the night sky in the forest above Yarnell, a
town of about 700 residents about 85 miles northwest of Phoenix [and about 82 miles southwest of TT Verde
Valley, our campground]. Most people had evacuated from the town, and no
injuries or other deaths were reported.
The fire started after a
lightning strike on Friday and spread to at least 2,000 acres on Sunday amid
triple-digit temperatures, low humidity and windy conditions.
Prescott Fire Chief Dan
Fraijo said that the 19 dead firefighters were a part of the city's fire
department.
"We grieve for the
family. We grieve for the department. We grieve for the city," he said at
a news conference Sunday evening. "We're devastated. We just lost 19 of
the finest people you'll ever meet."
Hot shot crews are elite
firefighters who often hike for miles into the wilderness with chain saws and
backpacks filled with heavy gear to build lines of protection between people
and fires. They remove brush, trees and anything that might burn in the
direction of homes and cities.
The crew killed in the blaze
had worked other wildfires in recent weeks in New Mexico and Arizona, Fraijo
said.
"By the time they got
there, it was moving very quickly," he told the AP of Sunday's fire.
He added that the
firefighters had to deploy the emergency shelters when "something
drastic" occurred.
"One of the last fail
safe methods that a firefighter can do under those conditions is literally to
dig as much as they can down and cover themselves with a protective — kinda
looks like a foil type — fire-resistant material — with the desire, the hope at
least, is that the fire will burn over the top of them and they can survive
it," Fraijo said.
"Under certain
conditions there's usually only sometimes a 50 percent chance that they
survive," he said. "It's an extreme measure that's taken under the
absolute worst conditions."
The National Fire
Protection Association had previously listed the deadliest wildland fire
involving firefighters as the 1994 Storm King Fire near Glenwood Springs,
Colo., which killed 14 firefighters who were overtaken by a sudden explosion of flames.
[Sidebar: I talked with a friend of ours who lives in Prescott this morning. She said all of the "hotshot" firefighters who were killed were from Prescott. They were the best of the best. It is really sad. Prescott is where we met Becky and Richard for lunch on Saturday, the day before the tragedy.]
LUNCH AT MURPHY'S IN PRESCOTT, AZ
BECKY AND RICHARD AT MURPHY'S IN PRESCOTT
Sat, Jun 29 - We are currently at TT Verde Valley in Cottonwood, AZ. Becky and Richard are staying in Williams, AZ. We are nowhere near each other, but, they called us the other day to see if we could meet them at Murphy's in Prescott for lunch on Saturday. Of course, we said "yes"!!
We had never eaten at Murphy's. They had. Becky and Richard arrived before we did. There happened to be an 80th Birthday party going on near where they were first seated. Too much noise!! Becky asked Andy, the manager, if we could be seated away from the party. (In the process she happened to mention that her friends (Ken and me) had never been to Murphy's before.) We were seated in a very private booth near the window!
Lunch was a lot of fun and delicious!! Don't know how I forgot to get a picture of our wonderful Reuben Sandwich plates!! When we were nearly finished eating, Andy came over to welcome us to Murphy's, and confirmed that we were new customers. Then he offered complimentary desserts for the table!! Ken chose the Carrot Cake. Richard and I had the Bread Pudding (their signature dessert). UUUMMMM
As we were leaving, we stopped to thank Andy for a wonderful lunch and especially for the dessert!! We asked him to take a picture with us!
Andy, Richard, Becky, Ken and Faye (all about 100 pounds heavier HA HA)
Thank you so much Becky and Richard for introducing us to Murphy's in Prescott!!

FINAL HAPPY HOUR AT THE ELEPHANT BAR!!
Fri Jun 14 - We are thinking this may be our last opportunity to go to the Elephant Bar in Palm Springs. We called our friends, Pam and Joe who live in LaQuinta, and arranged to meet them at the Bar!! It was great to see them again and say "Good Bye" to them and the Elephant Bar!!
Faye and Pam! Glad to be together again!!
Joe and Ken!
Ken ordered his favorite Calamari appetizer!
I ordered my favorite Seared Ahi Tuna appetizer but it turned into a salad. While the salad was very good, it was not the same!!
A new item on the Happy Hour Menu was Korean Beef Tacos. Pam and Joe both ordered the Tacos which they said were very good!
A great time was had by all. So sorry this will be our last time to enjoy The Elephant Bar!! Maybe when other friends go to the Elephant Bar they will think of us!!

SUPERMAN - MAN OF STEEL
Fri - Jun 14 - This morning we went to Mary Pickford Theater in Palm Springs to see Superman - Man of Steel. Since we went to the first matinee, they only charged $5.50/pp but no free popcorn any more!!
The "block buster" movie was pretty good, but did not live up to all the hype in our opinion. Ken said he just didn't like it because too much of the story dealt with "Cal L's" birth in Cripton and his early years on earth. (Cal L was Clarke Kent's birth name.)
I said it was just too much!! Too much fighting. Too much battling. Too much destruction. It seemed that one fight scene lasted 20 minutes and I thought it was finally over, only to begin all over again! Wow!! Too much!!
Anyway, I'm glad we saw it!! We had to do it!!!

GRANDSON RUSSELL GRADUATES FROM HILLTOP HS, CHULA VISTA, CA
Jun 07 - We have been staying around Southern California to follow up with Ken's Cardiologist after his defibrillator surgery AND to because we wanted to go to Grandson Russell's high school graduation!! Today we drove from TT Wilderness Lakes to Chula Vista, CA where Russell's Hilltop High School is located.
First we picked up Ken's son, Richard, and drove to the high school to check out the parking and seating at the football stadium. We picked up a reserved parking tag so Ken and I would not have to climb the steep hill to the stadium. We are so glad we did that!! And, we were glad we were prepared with cushion seats and umbrella for the hot sun.
The Commencement speeches were enjoyable and brief!! Unfortunately, the presentation of diplomas was so far away we were not able to get a picture of Russell receiving his diploma. But, after the ceremony, we gathered on the field for family pictures!
Russell with his Mom, Jennifer and Dad, Richard!
Russell with his proud Grandfather and Step-Grandmother!
After the graduation, we took the family to dinner. Richard suggested Phil's BBQ in San Diego as a good place for casual family gatherings. He was so right!!
Here we are enjoying fellowship with our family and a great meal! Richard, Russell, Jacob, Ken and Faye.
As you can see, Phil's does not skimp on the pulled pork BBQ!! UUMMMMM!!!
Russell was a football hero at Hilltop HS, among the top players, and he was named for honors in the region. He will be attending New Mexico Western under an athletic scholarship!! We are soooo proud!!
Young Jacob has made us very proud also. Jacob "graduated" from elementary to middle school and received the President's Award for Excellence!!!
Way to go boys!! CONGRATULATIONS!! Keep up the good work!!

HANGING OUT WITH FRIENDS
Fri. Apr 19 - Back in January my Ophthalmologist in Loma Linda discovered a scratch on the cornea of my right eye -- my injured eye. Dr. Affeldt has been treating it since that time and we have driven in to Loma Linda every week or two for follow up visits. My latest visit was scheduled for Thursday, April 19. Ken had surgery on April 17 and cannot drive for two weeks!! His doctor did say it would be alright for him to make the trip as long as he did not drive.
Our friends Shirley and Jim who are also at TT Palm Springs offered to drive us to Loma Linda, about 65 miles. I tried in vain to convince them that I was perfectly capable to drive, but they insisted!
After my appointment, we decided to stop by Long John Silver's for Fish & Chips on the way home. Ken did fine for the drive over and I was glad, after all, that I did not have
to drive.
Thanks Jim and Shirley for your very thoughtful offer to drive us!!
Sat. Apr 27 - Bill and Pat are back at TT Palm Springs. Great to see them again! Earlier this week they took me with them to Mary Pickford to see "42" while Ken was back home recuperating. Good movie about Jackie Robinson.
Today we asked if they would like to try Vietnamese food and took them to Pho Vu, our favorite. Here we are enjoying menu items #46, #48, and #11, and one other (that's how we order--by number!!)
Mon. Apr 29 - Today while at the Pickleball courts, Paul mentioned to me that mutual friend, Gordon, was picking him up for lunch at noon and he would bring him by our rig to say "HI". When I found out they were going to The 19th Hole for fish, I asked if we could crash their party. We have never been to the 19th Hole, and the fish sounded mighty good!
We had a grand old time talking about Pickleball friends we all had known. We talked about Peter and Tony, Myrtice and Chuck, Jim and remembered Vertrice, Norm and Marti, Wayne and Nancy, Geoff and another Nancy, Pete, Al, Ede, Jessie, Tom and Marion, Gretchen and remembered Bob, Brian and Eileen, Dennis and Jackie, Carolyn and remembered John, Denny and Sally, Steve and Cheryl, Harold and Marion, and on and on.
Here we are after all the fish and all the beer and all the talking!
Thanks Paul and Gordon for letting us join you today!

A NEW DEFIBRILLATOR FOR KEN, THE BIONIC MAN!!
Apr 16 - Background: In the middle of February, Ken was playing an afternoon game of Pickleball. When he came off the court he said he did not feel like playing anymore. He was exhausted! He did not feel like playing for the next few days. This was not like Ken at all!! We decided he should see a Cardiologist in the area. Our friends Pam and Joe who live nearby recommended Desert Cardiology Center at Eisenhower Medical Center.
We were able to get a new patient appointment with Dr. Frutkin in about a week and a half. That was too long to wait, so we went to the Urgent Care, just in case. After many tests they said Ken had not had a heart attack, but they sent him to the Eisenhower Emergency Room.
After many more tests, the Emergency Room said Ken had not had a heart attack, but they wanted to keep him overnight in Observation. The next day Ken was released from the hospital with the recommendation he follow up with his Cardiologist. We called Dr. Frutkin and were able to change the appointment to the following Tuesday, that was February 19.
Dr. Frutkin said the above tests showed what we already knew -- Ken had a weak heart. He has two stents from 1999 and 2001. In 2004 we discovered that the artery below the first stent was 100% blocked but secondary veins had taken over. Doctors determined it would be best not to operate but to treat the problem with medication.
Dr. Frutkin ordered some additional tests and when Ken saw him again, he had a surprise for us! He said all of the test results along with Ken's complaints of exhaustion indicated he might be a candidate for a Defibrillator or Pacemaker!! That's the first we have heard that!! An appointment was made with Dr. Rubin, the Electrophysiologist in the same office who would make the final determination and perform the surgery.
After reviewing the test results and Dr. Frutkin's recommendations, Dr. Rubin scheduled Ken for Defibrillator surgery the next week, April 16 at Eisenhower Medical Center!!
Here is how the Defibrillator is connected to the heart. We call Ken The Bionic Man because he has had a hip replacement, knee replacement, and now this Defibrillator!!
Surgery was a big success and Ken is at home recuperating. He needs to take it easy for two weeks and no tennis, golf or Pickleball for two months!! The new Defibrillator will help his heart pump stronger and make him feel much more energetic!! That will be WONDERFUL!!
SIDEBAR: Due to Ken's unexpected surgery, we have had to change our Schedule. Check it out.

AUGUSTINE CASINO 3RD ANNUAL BIG BBQ
Fri, Apr 12 - Pam and Walt were at TT Palm Springs when we arrived this time. They have had us to their place for dinner several times, so we decided to have them over for some of Ken's Fajitas. A few weeks ago Walt gave Ken a "magic" grill mat that you put on the grate when you grill. It is amazing! And, it worked perfectly for grilling the steak and veggies for Fajitas!! UUUMMMMM!!!
Ken and Walt enjoy GRILLING the Fajitas!!
Pam and Walt enjoy EATING the Fajitas!! Open wide, Pam!!
Faye and Ken enjoy EATING the Fajitas, too!! Great job, Ken!!
While we were enjoying Fajitas, we talked about going to the Augustine Casino 3rd Annual Big BBQ on Sunday, April 14. There would be food, music, prizes, etc. - and the tickets were only $5.00 each which we could get back in Free Play at the slots in the casino!! Sounded like fun!! Let's do it!!
There was a big crowd, but we managed to get to good table!!
Walt and Pam enjoying the BBQ. Walt ate his to the bone!! HA HA
Ken and Faye having a great time!!
When we were in line for our dinner, we discovered that the ticket price of $5.00 did NOT include the BBQ. But that was all right. This plate of ribs was only $5 and $3 for the beer. It was very good!! What a Deal!!
Two really good Country Western bands played throughout the afternoon.
We did not hear much of the music because we went into the casino to play the slots!! Won $10 - enough to pay for the tickets!!
It was a lot of fun and great food and entertainment. I'm ready for the 4th Annual Big BBQ!!

DANCING TREES AT TT PALM SPRINGS
Apr 14 - The weather could not have been more beautiful on Sunday afternoon while we were enjoying the Augustine Casino Big BBQ. However, the weather forecasts all weekend had been for winds up to 60-65 miles an hour in the Coachella Valley, where Augustine Casino is located, and only 13 miles from TT Palm Springs.
We soon discovered they were not lying as we drove back to the campground heading West on I-10. Winds almost blew us off the road and sand was so dense we could hardly see!!
See how the palm trees lean in the wind!!
This is the scene from our site. You cannot see the mountains on the horizon because of the blowing sand!
The exact same scene in November 2011.
I wanted an action picture to remember.
The sand storm was actually worse than it appears in the video and lasted for days!!! From Sunday through Wednesday afternoon!! What a mess. Sand everywhere!! I hope I never see another sand storm!!

BACK TO THE MOVIES AT MARY PICKFORD THEATER
Mar 28; Apr 4 - Back in the Palm Springs area, we look forward to going to the movies. We decided to go the Mary Pickford Theater to see "Olympus Has Fallen" with Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman.
WRONG!! The movie was TERRIBLE!!! Guess the trailers on TV were the best parts! That was a big waste of our free passes and two candy bars!!
About Mary Pickford's changed policies -- They are still honoring the old Ultra Senior Card if you still have one; however, they are no longer issuing the Senior Card. They said we seniors kept forgetting to bring our cards!! They changed their prices to only $6.00 all day - Except - (1) the first matinee each day will be $5.50; and (2) Tuesday and Thursday prices will be $5.50 all day unless otherwise posted for some new movies, in which case the price will be $6.00.
All was not lost; however. The next week we went to the "Dollar Movie" to see "Dead Man Down", directed by the Swedish director who directed the Swedish version of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo", Niels Arden Oplen. This was a very good movie and made up for the terrible Wonderstone!!
The movie was a very good action flick about the Capitol being attacked and the President kidnapped. Gerard Butler saves the day!! Only problem was the movie stopped running!! This happens occasionally at the "Dollar" Movie but you don't expect it to happen at a first run movie. But it did happen -- not once but two times during the movie. Ken and I thought we would have to see the manager and request a free pass for our Inconvenience. HA HA But, we were pleased the see the manager waiting for us at the exit, passing out free passes. We thought that was great customer service!
We decided to use our free pass to see "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone" with Steve Carell and Jim Carrey. The trailers looked pretty funny!
